Hughson used to celebrate their agricultural roots with their annual Hughson Fruit and Nut festival every May with a parade, car show and local vendors, but after local funds ran dry, the Hughson Fruit and Nut Festival has been non-existent for a couple of years now.
Locals might be able to see a return of the Hughson Fruit and Nut Festival with Hughson Council member Jeramy Young starting up the engines again to kick off a community celebration.
Council members discussed looking into some details at the Nov. 8 meeting to see if the return of the Hughson Fruit and Nut Festival is feasible.
"It would be good to get back to our roots and get community involvement," said Bob Newman, Hughson resident.
Council gave the go-ahead for Young to do some research and see what is out there to kick off a new community event or the traditional Hughson Fruit and Nut Festival.
The event may not be called the Hughson Fruit and Nut festival or be the same as in the past, but Young would like a community event for the residents of Hughson, he said.
Newman said that the Hughson Chamber of Commerce unanimously voted yes to donate the money they have left, which is $2,049, to a community event like the Hughson Fruit and Nut festival. He also has a list of volunteers that are willing and ready to get started.
All council members are in favor of starting up a community event for the people of Hughson, but noted the tough economic times.
"Realistically we are going to have to scale it down," said Matt Beekman, Hughson city council member. "We can't just pick up from where we left off, but that's OK."
Beekman noted that the focus of Hughson agriculture heritage was needed and the demand for a community celebration is present.
"I always hear people say that they miss the Fruit and Nut Festival," he said. "The demand is there."
Young will present his findings about conducting a community event at the next Hughson City Council meeting at 7 p.m. on Nov. 22 in Council Chambers.
