Agency on Aging seeks outstanding seniors

The Stanislaus County Area Agency on Aging is looking for a few good men and women. Every year the Agency on Aging asks the community to nominate those senior citizens who have gone the extra mile through service, humanitarianism, leadership, political advocacy or by just being a good neighbor.

Five nominees, one from each Supervisorial District, will be recognized by the Stanislaus County Board of Supervisors in May during Older Americans Month.

Last year, Ceres resident James Coverick of Ceres was the District 5 honoree.

Coverick, who is commander of Post #10293 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) of Ceres, and captain of the VFW Honor Guard, regularly volunteers at the VA Hospital in Livermore where he takes care of veterans who are ailing. Under his watch, the VFW post in Ceres nearly raised $9,000 at the recent crab feed -which benefits veterans and their families in the Wounded Warriers program, as well as giving to local sports teams in Ceres. He has also donated his time to refurbish the weapons used to fire 21-gun salutes at veterans' funerals.

To nominate someone for the 2016 Senior Awards, call the Agency on Aging at 558-7825. The deadline to submit nomination forms is March 10.
