A 19-year-old Modesto woman who was a volunteer counselor at Camp Taylor was killed Saturday morning when she pulled out in front of big-rig at Grayson and Shiloh roads about eight miles southwest of Ceres.
The crash was reported at approximately 11:09 a.m.
Avery Roxanne Millerick, 19, was just beginning cinema and television arts studies at Northridge University. She was described as a bright, compassionate young woman who dedicated her time to helping others.
The California Highway Patrol said that Millerick was driving a 2015 Kia sedan northbound in the Camp Taylor driveway at 8224 W. Grayson Road, which terminates at the intersection of W. Grayson and Shiloh roads. For some inexplicable reason, Millerick pulled into the intersection directly into the path of an eastbound 2025 International tractor/trailer combination driven by a 38-year-old man from Merced. The International collided directly into the driver’s side of the Kia. When emergency personnel arrived, Millerick had died from massive injuries.
The driver of the big-rig was not injured.
The CHP said both drivers were wearing their seatbelts and it is not suspected that drugs and/or alcohol contributed to the crash.
A vigil will be held for Avery at 7 p.m. tonight (Monday, June 23) at the Camp Taylor parking lot at 8224 W Grayson Road in Modesto.
A GoFundMe account has been set up to help the family with burial expenses. It had raised $24,055 as of Monday morning. It may be found at www.gofundme.com/f/support-ciara-walsh-in-memory-of-avery-roxanne
