About the business: Pawsome Cuts, a new dog grooming business, has opened in Ceres inside the commercial complex at Service and Mitchell roads.
The full service shop offers shampoo baths, cuts, de-matting, ear cleanings and nail trimming.
The shop is co-owned by Devon Dean and Terra Fahey, who is also the shop manager, and opened its doors Oct. 30. A grand opening is set for Wednesday, Dec. 10 that will include photos for pets with Santa Clause.
Dean also owns ShareSTAFF, a temp agency, and with her husband Inspire Academy in Stockton. She decided to get into the dog grooming business and teamed up with Fahey who worked at Monte Vista Animal Hospital in Turlock for three and a half years.
Groomers are Yady Hernandez, an AKC certified groomer and Jasmine Gonzales.
A large area of the shop is vacant as a free roam area for larger dogs who are awaiting their turn under the clippers but also is space to add additional groomers as the business grows.
“We see a wide range of pets in need and also pets that just need to get pampered,” said Fahey, who is the granddaughter of former Ceres Mayor Barbara Hinton, has lived in Ceres her whole life.
As she spoke an older dog was nervously pacing the floor after her owner left her. The dog was overdue for a trim and nail trimming.
“We had an Alaskan malamute that came in and it had twice as much hair as that one, and it was night and day when she left. So that dog’s gonna walk out here a lot different. We have dogs walking out here prancing. We put bows in their hair and we go walk out with their chest out.”
The business is still new and on Friday only seven dogs were scheduled for grooming.
“We can definitely accommodate more than that but again we just opened. We’ve had a lot of clients come to us because they have not been allowed to go to groomers because of behavior issues and we’ve had not a problem. All the dogs that came to us with that previous complaint and we’ve done quite well with them.”
Jasmine Gonzales has 12 years’ experience as a pet groomer.
“We handle any dog, any breed,” said Gonzales. “And we have a quick turnaround time of usually two to three hours.”
Any dog that doesn’t like being contained in the kennel is allowed to take a break roaming around the corralled open floor.
“There’s no way they can get out, they are really safe and it just helps with the anxiety to make it a fun experience versus a stressful one,” said Gonzales.
She reports being mindful of the owners while their pets are in the shop.
“We just communicate with their ‘parents’ throughout to let them know. We have no problem with parents calling and checking. And they can call us every hour if they want. We have their baby.”
Surprisingly the shop also will groom cats. Typically cats groom themselves but long-haired cuts do need trimming. As with dogs, the shop also trims claws and cleans ears.
