The Ceres Rotary Club honored two “Students of the Month” at Friday’s meeting – Central Valley High School senior Itzel Romero and Ceres High School senior Jesus Madrigal.

Normally the club honors one student at its meetings but a scheduling conflict came up and both Romero and Madrigal were honored.

Itzel Romero demonstrates a commitment and excellence to scholarship, leadership and citizenship. School officials say she is a true student leader who demonstrates resilience and excellence. She consistently maintains outstanding grades, which reflects her strong work ethic and determination. Passionate about sports, she excels in wrestling, softball and flag football.

Itzel also takes on leadership roles in school and community organizations, impacting and guiding families, students and residents. She has been involved in Leadership, Youth Advisory Council, Student Equity Cohort, CSF, ASB Club, ASB secretary, AP Spanish Literature Club and Health and Medicine Club. Her proudest moment was being chosen for Rotary Youth Leadership Academy (RYLA).

Another example of her leadership qualities presented itself during COVID. Inspired by her Mexican culture and in efforts to save money for college, Itzel started her own business, Itzel’s Treats making and selling her Homemade Chamoy and Homemade Rim Paste. She sells her products online through Instagram: @itzelstreats_209.

Itzel’s future plans are to attend San Joaquin Valley College or University of the Pacific to become a dental hygienist. She would be her family’s first-generation college student.

Jesus Madrigal

Ceres High School senior Jesus Madrigal was also selected for Rotary “Student of the Month” honors. The club noted that Madrigal’s friendly personality and good nature make him a great leader who has made a positive impact on campus and in the community.

Madrigal is completing his fourth year in Ceres High School’s Manufacturing Production and Green Technology (MPGT) Academy. He has enjoyed the hands-on projects offered at the academy and has proven to be very successful. Jesus has participated in multiple competitions and helped CHS secure many awards, such as the Solar Regatta where students build boats out of reusable items. Last year, Jesus was the only junior to receive the “Top Dog” award in the academy, one of the highest honors in the program.

Jesus has been a member of FFA for three years, where he earned the “FFA Outstanding Sophomore Award.” While in FFA, Madrigal served as a chapter sentinel during his junior year and is currently vice president.

He also participated in the Women’s Empowerment Club for the past two years, currently serving as the club treasurer.

Jesus fits sports into his busy schedule. He competes in track and field, and on the water polo team. Jesus placed third in WAC conference for pole vault.

After he graduates next June, Jesus plans to enlist in the U.S. Air Force.
