A 58-year-old Ceres woman was killed Saturday evening in a crash that occurred on Carpenter Road and is suspected of involving alcohol.

Amparo Sandoval died in the 8:30 p.m. crash. Investigators with the California Highway Patrol said that Sandoval was a passenger in a Volkswagen which was struck as it was stopped at a stop sign at Whitmore Avenue. The VW was struck by a vehicle driven by Victor Velasquez, 24, of Modesto. Velasquez's vehicle also collided with a Toyota which was also stopped at the intersection.

Injured in the crash was Ana Melendez, 26, of Ceres, who was driving the Volkswagen. She sustained major injuries and was rushed to Memorial Medical Center in Modesto for treatment of injuries.

The CHP said that the two people inside the Toyota were not hurt.

Since Velasquez was exhibiting signs of being drunk, he was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence and gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated.
