City Council approves buying sauna, cold tub for police officer use
Ceres Police headquarters on Third Street
Ceres Police headquarters on Third Street is where public safety dispatchers work.

Grant money awarded to the city of Ceres from the state Board of State and Community Corrections (BSCC) intended to improve officer wellness and mental health will be used to buy an infrared sauna, COLDTUB and accessories for the Ceres Police Department headquarters.

Money from the grant has already been used to set up a quiet room on the second floor of the Ceres Police Building, massage chairs, a couch, pillows and blanket throw, table and chairs, gym equipment, StairMaster, treadmill, mirrors and peer support training.

With the remaining $19,433, Police Chief Chris Perry asked for an infrared sauna and COLDTUB for officer use as well as accessories.

Infrared saunas are used to improve heart health, soothe sore muscles after physical activity, aid in the treatment of chronic pain, decrease depression, anxiety and stress, promote better sleep and help fight off illness.

COLDTUB therapy has been proven to have a positive effect on recovery after exercise by reducing inflammation, muscle damage and soreness. It also helps build resiliency, restore balance to the nervous system and improve cognitive function and mood.

Councilwoman Rosalinda Vierra grilled the chief about sanitation, safety issues relating to slipping hazards and the chief answered those concerns to her satisfaction.

The council voted 4-1 to approve the purchased with Councilman James Casey voting no.
