The Ceres Library will offer a variety of arts and crafts, literacy and family fun events throughout the month of October.
The library will host a LEGO Day event at 4 p.m. Thursday Oct. 9 where children will have the opportunity to build LEGO creations using the library’s LEGO and Duplo blocks. This program helps young ones develop critical thinking skills, and teaches basic engineering concepts. Children under 4 are welcome, but must have direct parental supervision.
Read to a dog
Independent readers up to age 12 are invited to practice their reading skills with the special Read to a Dog program at 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 11 at the Ceres Library. This program is designed to help children gain confidence in their reading skills by reading aloud to certified therapy dogs. Space is limited and online registration is required.
Master gardeners
The Master Gardeners will be at the library at 1 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 13 to talk about shade trees. Deciduous trees provide summer shade and let in winter sun, helping reduce heating and cooling costs. Evergreen trees are a great choice as well. Fall is the perfect time to plant a tree, so join our class and find your perfect match.
Dungeons & Dragons
The Ceres Library hosts Dungeons & Dragons play time for teens aged 13 to 18 on Monday, Oct. 13 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Teens, are you seeking adventure? Want to slay a dragon or maybe save a town from a horde of goblins? Come play D&D at the library! Players will learn team-building and problem-solving skills while engaging their imaginations in a safe, collaborative environment.
Participants need not provide anything but an open mind and an excitement for fun. No experience is necessary.
The adult session of Dungeons and Dragons will be offered from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 18.
Storytime for kids
Storytime for children under the age of five will be offered on Tuesday, Oct. 14 at 10:30 a.m.; and at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 21. Story Time features books, stories, songs, finger plays, rhymes and more. It is designed for children under 5 to participate with their caregivers, but all ages are welcome! Space is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis. Right after both story time sessions is a Wee Move & Play session for a half hour of music, movement and play. Children can enjoy unstructured play while socializing with their peers.
A Halloween Story Time & Party for the young ones will be held Tuesday, Oct. 28 at 10:30 a.m. The library will read silly, not-too-spooky books about Halloween. Children are encouraged to wear their favorite costumes, join in a mini parade around the library, and stick around for some fun Halloween party games.
Adult watercoloring
Guided watercolor painting for adults will be offered at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 14. Explore the world of watercolor painting and follow a prompt guided by a local artist. To register call 209-537-8938. The event is being sponsored by the Friends of the Ceres Library.
2-D Sand castles
A program to make 2-D sand castles will be offered at 4 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 16. For this craft, participants will use glue to draw castles on construction paper and pour sand over the glue to create a two-dimensional sand castle.
3-D Pens at the Ceres Library for Teens and Adults will be offered at 4 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 20. Learn how to use a 3-D Pen, basic safety and handling techniques and make creations using patterns or your original designs. Participants who are 13 years of age and older must register by calling 209-537-8938.
Garden bulbs explained
The Ceres Garden Club and club member Manjeet Dosanjh, a Certified Gardening Consultant, will offer a “Beginning Gardening for Kids: What Are Bulbs?” session at 4 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 23. Join to learn more about a kind of plant that you may not have heard of before: bulbs. Come in to see examples and learn more about these tubular plants.
A STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) event to make Oobleck Slime at 4 p.m. Oct. 30. Oobleck is a funny kind of goop that behaves like a liquid or a solid depending on how you touch it. It is made up of only two ingredients: cornstarch and water. But how does oobleck feel to the touch? Join in to find out as it is made it together.
