The office building of Vineyard Apartments, 1625 Richland Avenue, sustained heavy damage by a fire that broke out early Friday morning.

A quick attack on the 1 a.m. fire by the Ceres Fire Department contained the blaze to the office, which faces Richland Avenue. Ceres Fire Chief Bryan Nicholes said no other structures within the complex were threatened however residents from adjacent units were displaced due to smoke damage.

In evaluating the damage in the 20-foot by 30-foot building, Nicholes said "they're not going to operate business there for a while."

When the first of four Ceres engines and all on-duty firefighters arrived, heavy smoke and flames were coming out of the office windows.

The last unit cleared the scene at 8:30 a.m.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by Ceres Police Detective Tonya Smith and Nicholes would not answer questions about the origin of the fire.

A total of 13 firefighters tackled the blaze.
