Flu claims young Hughson grad
• GoFundMe set up for son’s burial costs
Uriel Sanchez dies
Uriel Sanchez, a recent Hughson High School graduate, died Jan. 9 from complications related to the flu.

The community is rallying around a Stanislaus County family after the passing of Uriel Sanchez, who died from complications related to the flu on Jan. 9, according to GoFundMe. The fundraiser aims to help his parents cover funeral costs and other related expenses. As of Tuesday morning, the community has donated $12,725 to help Laura and Lenin Ramirez bury their son.

“Uriel was a hard worker, a loving friend, and a proud Hughson school alumni who always cared deeply for his family,” posted Maria G. Perez on GoFundMe. “His sudden passing has left everyone heartbroken. Laura and Lenin have always been there for others, offering kindness and support whenever someone was in need.»

As the Ramirez’s face the unimaginable loss of their son, they are in need of the same compassion they have so often given to others. The unexpected costs of funeral arrangements and related expenses have added to the emotional burden the couple is carrying.

The Centers for Disease Control estimates that between 3,000 and 49,000 people die from the flu each year in the United States. Getting a flu shot is the single most important thing one can do to protect personal health and the health of your family. The Stanislaus County Public Health Department is offering many low-cost or free flu vaccinations at more than different special clinics around the county.

“The flu virus can be spread 24 hours before a person is aware they are ill,” stated Dr. John Walker, Public Health Officer for Stanislaus County.

Health agencies are saying the H3N2 subclade K variant is highly contagious, though data have not shown an increase in symptom severity.
