The 48-year-old female pedestrian who was struck by a hit-and-run driver on March 18 in south Modesto has died from her injuries.

The crash was reported at 7:20 a.m. on Tuesday, March 18. The driver responsible for the crash was nowhere to be found.

Cheryl Spangler, 48, of Modesto, was found lying on the west dirt shoulder of S. Seventh Street south of Blankenburg Avenue suffering from major injuries. She was rushed by ambulance to Doctors Medical Center. She died on May 3.

The California Highway Patrol investigated and tracked down the driver, Magali Sevilla, 24, of Modesto, and arrested her on March 25. She was booked into the Stanislaus County Public Safety Center on charges of felony hit-and-run.

Investigators identified the car as a gray-colored 2011 Honda SUV. It was traveling southbound on S. Seventh Street when the right front hit Spangler and knocked her into the dirt shoulder on the west side of the street.

“It is still an ongoing investigation,” said California Highway Patrol spokesman Officer Tom Olsen. “As of now, manslaughter charges have not been sought.  Additional charges can always be recommended at a later date.”

Assisting in the investigation is the Stanislaus County Auto Theft Task Force (StanCATT).
