Hughson couple rescued after van enters TID canal

An accident placed a Hughson couple and their car in the Ceres Main Canal near Hughson on Thursday but a quick-acting bystander dove in and pulled both to safety.

Linda Boggeri, 67, was eastbound on Hatch Road behind traffic that was backed up at Santa Fe Avenue at 4:40 p.m. According to the California Highway Patrol, traffic pulled up and the Boggeri's 2001 Chrysler Town & Country mini-van veered toward the canal as the accelerator was pressed to a rapid acceleration. The car plunged into the full canal. She later told the CHP that she may have suffered a medical issue as reason for the acceleration.

The motorist who had been behind the Boggeri vehicle stopped his vehicle and ran to the edge of the canal to check on the occupants. The man, identified as John-Adam Wells, jumped into action with little thought of his own safety and first pulled Mrs. Boggeri out of the sinking car through an open window. He took her to the edge and went back for Mike Boggeri, 74, of Hughson, who was strapped into a wheelchair inside the van. Wells was able to free Mike as the cab of the van filled with water. By then Adams was assisted by a second man.
