The city of Hughson wants to develop a new civic center and will be holding a public meeting to receive input next week.

The Hughson City Council recently approved allocating a portion of funds from the federal American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) to build the first phase of a Civic Center. Phase 1 includes hiring on architectural firm to design a modern facility to renovate the current City Hall and Fire Department building, with potential use of adjacent roads. It may also include talk about incorporating the Hughson branch of the Stanislaus County Library to address space needs.

A drawing released by the city shows plans that would tear down City Hall and build a new one on Charles Street, razing the current fire station and building a new station with apparatus bays on Pine Street and erecting a new library and police station at the northeast corner of Charles and Pine streets.

The public meeting will take place at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 7 at City Hall, 7018 Pine Street, and citizens are invited to share their thoughts on the development of the new center.
