Public invited to put out flags on Ceres graves for Memorial Day
Service set for 10 a.m. Memorial Day

The Ceres Post of the American Legion invites the public to assist in raising the American flags at Ceres Memorial Park on Whitmore Avenue starting at 6 a.m. and then retiring the flags at 4:30 p.m. on Memorial Day, Monday, May 28.

A Memorial Day service will be held at 10 a.m. at the cemetery, which will include short presentations from local dignitaries and a rifle salute in honor of our fallen heroes.

Lakewood event scheduled
The Modesto American Legion Post #74 and Veterans Organizations of Stanislaus County announce their annual Memorial Day ceremony on Monday, May 28 at Lakewood Memorial Park, 900 Santa Fe Avenue in Hughson. The public is invited to attend the 1 p.m. ceremony.

The 191stArmy Band, "Band of the Wild West," returns to perform some of the great American anthems accompanied by special guest performers. Participating in this year's ceremony are the Ceres High School Theater Department and the La Loma Junior High School choir.

Guest speaker will be Brigadier General Frank Emanuel, CSMR of the California Military Department.

Cecilia Gaerlan, executive director of the Bataan Legacy Historical Society, will share a living story of Vicente S. Bautista, Jr. who is one of the last remaining survivors of the Bataan Death March. On April 9, 1942 the Bataan Death March was the forcible transfer of prisoners of war by the Japanese Imperial Army.

SSG Steve Trapp will re-enact "Table Set for One" with the presentation of colors by the California National Guard, a flag pole ceremony by California National Guard, California State Honor Guard and wreath ceremony followed by a white dove release.

The Avenue of Flags display and the Poppy Crosses will be on display until 3 p.m. Volunteers who perform that service are the U.S. Naval Sea Cadets (Modesto Division), The American Legion (Post #74) and the Veterans of Foreign Wars (Post #3199).

Memorial Day is a federal holiday in the United States for remembering the people who died while serving in the country's armed forces.
