Reading effort ends in bike giveaway
Delaney Weeks
Nine-year-old Delaney Weeks was presented with a new bicycle and helmet after her name was randomly selected in a drawing after she completed the Summer Reading Challenge through the Ceres Library.

Two youths in Ceres are now riding around on new bikes because they like to read.

Okay, luck had something to do with Delaney Weeks, 9, and Joshuah Michelena, 14, winning bicycles as their names were randomly selected in a drawing after they completed the Summer Reading Challenge through the Ceres Library.

The Summer Reading Challenge began May 18 and ended August 3 and included separate programs for children and adults.

“This is the first year the program has been virtual, meaning, participants registered online, then logged all their reading on the website,” said Ceres Library Assistant Susan Sawyer. “When a child had finished reading 30 days, he or she could come to the library and pick up a free book bag and a free book to keep.”

The Ceres Friends of the Library continued with its tradition of donating the funds to purchase the bicycles and helmets for two children who complete the summer reading challenge.

“We are so proud of our Ceres readers,” said Sawyer.
