A Ceres woman was killed early Monday morning after she was struck by a vehicle as she pedaled a bicycle on Highway 99.

The California Highway Patrol reported that the deadly accident occurred at 12:15 a.m. on the northbound freeway just south of Hatch Road. The victim was riding in the slow lane and her Schwinn bicycle had no lights. She was not seen until it was too late by Delhi driver Jorge Banuelos who was going the same direction in a Toyota Tacoma at 65 mph. The impact instantly killed the woman and her body had fell under the wheels of several vehicles.

Ceres Police Lt. Brent Smith said he had not confirmed it but the victim may have been the same woman who was cited last week by Ceres patrol officer Jason Coley for darting across Highway 99 on a bicycle. The woman may have been homeless, he said.

The name of the victim will not be released pending notification of kin.

CHP Officer Philip DePrater said the death is being investigated to determine if the victim was either intoxicated or under the influence of drugs.
