A Thursday evening altercation between gang factions at the Carl's Jr. restaurant on Hatch Road resulted in a shooting in which a teenager was seriously injured.

The shooting occurred at approximately 9:57 p.m. Dec. 2 on the sidewalk outside the fast food restaurant. When officers arrived they found an 18-year-old Modesto man inside the restaurant and suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to his torso. The victim, whose name was not released, was transported by ambulance to a local hospital where he was listed in critical condition. However, he was expected to survive.

Detective Derek Perry said it's believed that the victim was engaged in an argument inside the restaurant with the suspects and that it spilled outside where the shooting took place. Bullets struck the outside of the business which was immediately closed by police to process the crime scene.

"It appears that the shooting was gang related, and not a random event," said Ceres Police in a press release. "The victim was not an employee of the restaurant."

Witnesses were located and interviewed, said Perry. Police were expecting to interview the victim this week.

Anyone with information about the attempted homicide is asked to contact Detective Derek Perry at 538-5730.
