Unemployment rates in the Central Valley continued to climb up in November as the job market cooled with the temperatures, according to the latest data released from the Economic Development Department.
The unadjusted seasonal unemployment rate for Stanislaus County reached 17.2 percent in November, just shy of the record-breaking rate of 17.5 percent set earlier this year in March. The unemployment rate for the county in October was 16.6 percent.
Merced County's November unemployment rate jumped to 18.3 percent from 16.4 percent in October and San Joaquin rose to 16.9 percent, up .8 percentage point from October.
There were more than 112,000 people unemployed during November in the three counties combined, according to the EDD's data.
It's typical for the Central Valley to see an increase in the unemployment rate in the colder months because the harvest season has ended, but the high rates the area is experiencing now are a symptom of the continued economic crisis, according to the EDD.
The state's unemployment rate fell to 12.3 percent, down .2 percentage point from October and up 4 percentage points from last year.
Within nonfarm industries, five sectors in the state saw month-over job gains, and six sectors saw month-over job declines. Sectors with increased employment were: Professional and business services (8,000); information (3,800); construction (1,200); other services (400); and mining and logging (100). Sectors that lost jobs in November, in order of job loss, were: Trade, transportation and utilities (8,200); leisure and hospitality (6,700); government (3,800); manufacturing (2,300); financial activities (1,500); and educational and health services (1,200).
The county with the highest unemployment rate in November was Imperial County with 29.2 percent. In total, 21 counties had rates of 15 percent and above.
