A graveside service was held at Lakewood Memorial Park for Alvin Jay Lucas, 86, of Modesto. He died Aug. 26, 2009.

A Celebration of his Life was held at the Modesto Christian Reformed Church. Salas Brothers Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Born May 26, 1923 in Holland, Michigan, Alvin was a long time resident of Modesto and a member of Modesto Christian Reformed Church. When he was a small child, his family moved to Farmington, New Mexico. During high school, his family moved to Alameda. He graduated from Alameda High School. Mr. Lucas fought in World War II primarily in France and Germany. After the war, he moved to the family's small dairy farm in Modesto. In 1947, he married Lois Hirdes. They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary before Lois passed away in 2008. Alvin was active in the Modesto Christian Reformed Church. He enjoyed Men's Bible Study Fellowship for many years. A union commercial carpenter, Alvin enjoyed camping and waterskiing. He volunnteered to do disaster relief work with Christian Reformed World Relief Committee.

He leaves behind five children, Dennis Lucas, Gordon Lucas, Bob Lucas and Ron Lucas, all of Modesto and Karen Nydam of Ceres; his brother, Glen Lucas of Ceres; his sister, Donna Morris of Hughson; nine grandchildren, Craig Lucas, Cyndi Dickason, Eddie Lucas, Kevin Lucas, Joshua Lucas, Jordan Lucas, and Jared Lucas, all of Modesto and Miranda Nydam and Luke Nydam, both of Ceres; and two great-grandsons, sons Ayden Lucas and Ryan Lucas, both of Modesto.
