A funeral Mass was held Friday at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Hughson for Bellmeda Avila Bettincourt, 88, of Hughson. She died March 31, 2010 at Alexander Cohen Hospice House in Hughson.

Burial was a Lakewood Memorial Park under the direction of Lakewood Funeral Home .

Born July 28, 1921, Mrs. Bettincourt was a native of Hughson and attended Hughson schools. She studied at Modesto Junior College and lived in Modesto for 58 years. In 2004 she moved back to Hughson as a resident of Samaritan Village. Mrs. Bettincourt was president of the Salida Mother's Club from 1957 to 1958. She was a licensed vocational nurse for 10 years and worked at Scenic General Hospital. A professional artist, Belle was known for her realistic old barns and houses and was a member of the Central California Art League. She worked side by side with husband Carl on their farm on Hart Road in Modesto for many years.

Mrs. Bettincourt also was a member of the St. Stanislaus Catholic Church where she was a Eucharistic minister, St. Anthony's Catholic Church and Our Lady of Fatima Senior Club, St. Stanislaus Church Senior Club, and the Modesto YLI #110 and Hughson YLI #193.

She leaves behind by their children, David C. Bettincourt of Vernon, Ariz., and Janice "Jan" A. Dunkel of Modesto; three sisters, Rose Bettencourt and Nellie Presson, both of Ceres, and Emily Bunch of Hughson; and four grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Carl Bettincourt in 1997.
