A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. today (Wednesday, Jan. 27) at Allen Mortuary in Turlock for Charles Edward Wright, 87, of Turlock. The former Ceres resident died Jan. 21, 2010.

Burial will be at the Golden Gate National Cemetery in San Francisco.

Born January 3, 1923 in Beggs, Okla., to Noah Aaron and Bertha Lee Wright, Charles lived at various times in Oklahoma, Texas, Colorado, and Arizona before relocating to Oakdale in the late 1930s. He graduated from Oakdale High School in 1946. Following his first wife's death, he married Reba Maxine Morrow, to whom he was married for 36 years. Maxine died Dec. 24, 2009.

Chuck joined the Army in 1943 and was stationed in Tomah, Wisc., where he met his first wife, Viola Attewell. They were married Dec. 23, 1943, in Sioux Falls, S.D. The marriage lasted 27 years until her death in 1970. In 1945, after his return from military service in World War II, they settled in Oakdale and started their family. Chuck was a partner with his father in an Oakdale roofing business from 1946 to 1948. He then enlisted in the Air Force, serving 22 years and moving frequently around the United States.He retired in 1966 as a master sergeant, then went to work for Norris Industries and Louis Rich before finally retiring in 1988. After marrying in 1973, Chuck and Maxine lived in Ceres until 1989, when they moved to Turlock. Mr. Wright enjoyed traveling in his fifth-wheeler and visiting family and friends at various Thousand Trails campgrounds. Chuck and Maxine were faithful and active members of the Sunrise Christian Church in Turlock, where Chuck served as deacon and elder. His interests included aviation, politics, religion, hunting, fishing, music, and coin collecting. He was active in the Masons.

He leaves behind four children, Gary Wright, Stan Wright, Jim Wright, and Diana Wright; and eight grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Chuck was blessed to have relationships with Maxine's family, including her son Daryl, daughter Lois, and their children and grandchildren.
