Arrangements for Donald Elwood Evans, 79, of Ceres, are being handled by the Neptune Society. Private graveside service will be announced at a future date, followed by a private celebration of life for relatives and close friends.

He died Jan. 4, 2011 at his home.

Born March 27, 1931 in Modesto to John and Ena Evans, Donald served in the Army for 20 years, retiring as a Master Sergeant 1st Class Grade E7. He served three tours in Korea. He also served in Germany and Japan. In Japan, he was assigned to General MacArthur's Honor Guard. After leaving the Army, Mr. Evans became a deputy sheriff in Monterey County. He transferred to Gonzales Police Department, where he was a detective and commander. An on-the-job injury forced him to retire after 10 years. He spent nearly 30 years with wife, Betty Jean Wall until her death in 1980. They had four sons, Chuck, Donald, Jonathan, and Ronald. After retiring, Don moved to Reno and worked in security at a casino, where he met his second wife, Carolyn, who was a casino worker. They were married in September 1992. After Betty's death, Don adopted and raised his granddaughter, Annette Dawn Evans. Don lived in the Portland, Ore., area for several years, and then moved to Modesto/Ceres area. He was a member of the Ceres Senior Club and a member of Central General Baptist Church in Ceres. Mr. Evans enjoyed fishing and playing poker.

He leaves behind his wife of 18 years, Carolyn Evans of Ceres; two sons, Donald Eugene Evans, and John Evans; his sister, Irene Blankenship; his brother, John Burton Evans; five grandchildren, Ronald Glen Evans, Annette Dawn Evans, Jessica Kupustas, Donald Eugene Evans, Jr., and Garbriel Evans; three step-grandchildren, James Dale, Jason Dale and Sara Dale-Audette; and numerous great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, sons Chuck Evans and Ronnie Evans, step-daughter, Rachelle Wright, brothers Kermit Evans, Floyd Evans, and William Evans, and sister Elsie Richardson.
