A memorial was held Thursday at First Baptist Church for Donald Richard Wallace Sr., 68, of Modesto. He died Dec. 27, 2007 in Hughson.

Born July 24, 1938, Mr. Wallace was a native of San Mateo and moved to the Ceres-Modesto area when he was 11 years old. He attended school in Ceres and at Downey High School. He was involved with sports at both schools. Don was a middle weight golden gloves participant in San Mateo. After graduating from high school, Donald attended Modesto Junior College and then joined the Navy. He served on the USS Boxer. After leaving the Navy he was hired by the Modesto Bee in the advertising department where he worked for 40 years. Don was involved with the Rotary Club, Salvation Army and many other community associations during his employment with The Bee. He retired in 2001.

Mr. Wallace enjoyed camping with family and friends, especially at Half Moon Bay. Don had a green thumb. He was an avid sports fan, especially for the 49ers, Giants, and Warriors. He was truly the biggest fan and supporter of any team his son was coaching or any teams his grandchildren were playing for.

He leaves behind his wife of 46 years, Theresa Wallace of Modesto; his son, Donald Wallace; his brother, Ed Wallace of Fairfield; and his grandchildren, Courtney and Austin. He was preceded in death by his father, mother, step-mother, and a brother.

A memorial fund in Don's name is being established at Modesto High School. Checks made payable to Modesto High School, attention to Don Wallace Sr. Memorial fund.
