Visitation will be from 4:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday at Lakewood Funeral Home for Edgar Baldwin, 86, of Hughson. He died Aug. 28, 2007 in Modesto.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday in the Lakewood Funeral Home Chapel.

Born Aug. 3, 1921, Mr. Baldwin was born and raised in Hughson, where his family originally settled in the 1870's. He graduated from San Jose State College in 1947 with a degree in Business Administration. Mr. Baldwin was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity during his college years.

He enlisted in the Navy following the outbreak of World War II and served in naval intelligence in Hawaii and on the battleship USS Mississippi in the Pacific. His service included participation in the battles of Leyte Gulf, Surigao Strait, Okinawa and others. After the war, and following the death of his father in 1954, he managed the Baldwin Ranch Company, which had been acquired in 1887 by his grandfather.

Mr. Baldwin served on the Hughson Unified School District Board and was active for many years in community affairs. Along with the late Jack Veneman, he helped form the Western Growers' Association.

He leaves behind his wife, Elaine Baldwin of Hughson; his brother, Elwin Baldwin; sons, Robert Baldwin, Ronald Baldwin and Bruce Baldwin; and six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
