A funeral service was held Monday at Turlock Funeral Home for Ernest "Ernie" Conrad Prouty, 80, of Turlock. The former Keyes resident died Jan. 25, 2011 in Modesto with his wife and children by his side.

Entombment was at Chapel of Memories at Turlock Memorial Park.

Born July 19, 1930 in Modesto to Russell and Ethel Prouty, Ernie attended Keyes Elementary School, Turlock High School, and Brown Military Academy. He received his driver's license at age 14 and still held his commercial A-1 license which he acquired in 1944. He began driving truck that year and worked as a partner in a family-owned trucking business. In 1964 Mr. Prouty started his own trucking company, Ernest Prouty & Sons, Inc., building it up from one to 40 trucks. He enjoyed RV travel with his wife, Darlene, riding ATVs in the Yuma, Ariz., area, and caring for animals. Mr. Prouty was a member of the Antique Truck Historical Society, and the Moose and Elks Lodges.

He leaves behind his wife of 60 years, Darlene Prouty of Turlock; his five children, Dennis Prouty of Hughson, Russell Prouty of Hickman, Doug Prouty of Ajo, Ariz., Debra Volk and Diane Watling, both of Turlock; two brothers, Bert Prouty of Keyes and Richard Prouty of Adair, Okla.; and 13 grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.

Remembrances may be sent to a favorite charity; or to the SPCA of Stanislaus, 4733 Yosemite Blvd., Modesto CA 95357.
