A memorial was held Monday at the family home in Sallisaw for Howard "Big Mac" Warren McWhirter Sr., 78, of Sallisaw, Okla. He died Thursday, July 14, 2005 at St. Edwards Mercy Hospital in Fort Smith, Ark.

Mallory-Martin Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Born June 3, 1927, Mr. McWhirter was a native of Bethpage, Tenn., and previously lived in Modesto for 30 years. He was a heavy equipment operator for 40 years. Mr. McWhirter was a member of the Operating Engineers Local No. 3 in Ceres. He enjoyed NASCAR and growing flowers.

Mr. McWhirter leaves behind four children, Howard W. McWhirter Jr. of Modesto, Tracy Pearce of Luther, Okla., Nancy Jones of Gallitin, Tenn., and Windey Harper of Alabama; his sister, Fran D. Curry of San Jose; and three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
