A celebration of life is being planned for James D. Smith, 77, of Modesto. He died May 28, 2011.

Born Aug. 12, 1933 in St. Paul, Minn., to Leo and Charlotte Smith, James served in the armed forces from November 1955 to November 1957 after receiving his honorable discharge. He moved to Oakland where he worked many years with his father in a family insurance business. He enjoyed a Bay area real estate career until retirement. Mr. Smith enjoyed spending much of his spare time working with animal rescue and adoption groups, most recently the Alley Cat Guardians.

He leaves behind his niece and nephew, Cara and Michael Smith of Ceres; three great nieces, Taylor Parrish of Ceres, Christi Klyne of Reno, and Heidi Partridge of Long Beach. He was preceded in death by his brother Robert L. Smith.
