A memorial service was held Friday at Grace Community Christian Church in Ceres for Janice Eakle Gilgert, 85, of Ceres. She died Feb. 28, 2012.

Born June 17, 1926 in Haskell County, Okla., to Roy and Bertha Mason Eakle, Janice grew up on a farm. She retired after spending 25 years with the Employment Development Department in Modesto where she earned many awards. She was active in the California State Employees Association and their support of the Firefighters Burn Program. She was a member of the Alpha Omega for 49 years and a member of Grace Community Church for 16 years.

She leaves behind her husband, Irving Gilgert of Ceres; her children, Cara Smith and Michael Smith, both of Ceres; three stepchildren, Wendell Gilgert of Bodega Bay, Randy Gilgert of Idaho and Janie Seese of Sacramento; her sister, Billye Chrestman of Scottsdale, Ariz., her brother, Dale Eakle, Quinton, Okla.; and three grandchildren, Taylor Parrish of Ceres, Heidi Smith of Reno, Nev., and Christie Smith of Long Beach. She was preceded in death by her parents and brother Donald Eakle.

Remembrances may be sent to the local hospice.
