John "Jack" Freas Schalles

A memorial service was held Monday at Spring Creek Country Club in Ripon for Jack Schalles, 87, of Ceres. He died April 25, 2011 after a short illness.

The Neptune Society was in charge of cremation.

Born Oct. 20, 1923 in Nescopeck, Pa., to Fred and Iva Schalles, Jack served in the US Navy/Air Force on the USS Enterprise aircraft carrier during World War II as a turret gunner. He graduated with a bachelor of arts degree in teaching from East Stroudsberg State College in Pennsylvania and earned his master's degree. He was employed as a math and science teacher at Walter White School at 37 years. Jack also coached High School basketball, winning multiple state championships. Mr. Schalles lived in Ceres for 55 years. He was a member of Spring Creek Country Club in Ripon, where he golfed several days of the week. Jack was an avid sports fan. He especially loved attending his grandchildren's and great grandson's sporting events

He leaves behind two daughters, Debbie Howard of Lees Summit, Mo., and Trudy Prickett of Peculiar, Mo.; three grandchildren, Ryan Howard, Betsy Kellerman and Eric Prickett; and three great-grandchildren, Kelton Kellerman, Lexie Kellerman and Gentry Howard. He was preceded in death by wife Marion Schalles.
