A memorial service will be held at the Church of Christ, 1519 Tully Road in Hughson at 10 a.m. on Friday for John Wayne Harp, 68, of Hughson. He died on Sept. 25, 2008 after an extended illness.

Burial will follow at 2 p.m. at the San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery in Santa Nella.

Born Dec. 13, 1939 to George and Mary Harp, John was a native of Bakersfield. The family moved to Hughson in 1952. John graduated from Hughson High School in 1957 and then studied at Modesto Junior College. He later served in the Army. Mr. Harp retired after 35 years with the Southern Pacific Railroad. As a switchman for the railroad he traveled throughout the state and especially enjoyed the route along the Feather River. He enjoyed fishing, hunting watching sports, Nascar, and horse racing.

He leaves behind his son, Sean Harp; his sister, Jody Mendonca of Hughson; his brother, Steve Harp of Hughson; and his grandchildren, Camille and Myles Harp, both of Turlock. He was preceded in death by his parents.
