A celebration of life was held Saturday at Samaritan Village in Hughson for Lawrence Ray Cunningham, 89, of Hughson. He died July 19, 2012 in Modesto with family members at his side.

Born April 28, 1923 in Knob, Ark., to Jess and Flora Cunningham, Lawrence was a life-long truck driver and resident of the area. He moved to Waterford in 1936 and remained near Modesto for the duration of his life. Ray served in World War II as an Army medic in the 81st "Wildcat" Division, fighting in battles on Angaur Island and Peleiu Island. Upon his return Ray drove trucks for many local companies, including Gallo, Tri Valley, Talbot and for Cunningham Ranch in Hughson. He was a resident of Samaritan Village in Hughson for the past three years.

Ray leaves behind his sons, Ray Cunningham and Jimmy Cunningham; his brother, Ham Cunningham; and nephews including Kenn and Dick Cunningham of Hughson and Boyce Lutes of Ceres.
