Born March 1924 in Faith, S.D., to John and Gertrude Haas, Mary moved to Oregon she was about 10 years old. She completed her high school and college education and began teaching even before her college degree was completed. She was an elementary school teacher for 40 years. She married Elmer Rasmussen in 1944 and they were married for 60 years when he passed away in 2004. Her husband was a pastor and church life was a vital part of her life. During their retirement, Mary and Elmer travelled around the country doing safety inspections for Seventh-day Adventist churches and schools, saving those organizations thousands of dollars and providing safer places of study and worship. Mary enjoyed reading, sewing, and birding.

She leaves behind her children, Beverly Wetherbee of Hughson, and Kenneth Rasmussen of Laurel, Md.; her brother, Clifford "Arnold" Haas; and four grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband Elmer.
