A funeral service was held Saturday afternoon at Valley View Church of the Nazarene in Ceres for Melva E. Cummings Soares, 72, of Ceres. She died of natural causes at her home on Wednesday, Sept. 8, 2004.

Burial at Ceres Memorial Park was handled by the Ceres Chapel of Franklin & Downs.

Born July 29, 1932, Mrs. Soares was a native of Longmont, Colo., and lived in Ceres for 39 years and Stanislaus County for 60 years. She was co-owner of a transportation business. Mrs. Soares was a member of the Central Valley Corvette Club.

She leaves behind her husband, Frank Soares of Ceres; six children, Sherry Soares, Ron Soares, Tami Creekmore and Janeene Soares, all of Ceres, Dawnette Soares of Mariposa, and Connie McGirkl of Deer Park, Wash.; three brothers, Pete Cummings of Ceres, Clyde Cummings of Las Vegas, Nev., and Cliff Moss of Ceres; three sisters, Opal Cummings of Ceres, Lorraine Sheader of Colorado and Ada Jobbins of Idaho; and 12 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Soares was preceded in death by her daughter, Kami Soares.
