A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. today at Lakewood Funeral Home, for Michelle J. Nicholes, 92, of Modesto. She died Oct. 10, 2011.

Born in Liege, Belgium on June 27, 1919, Michelle attended and graduated from Basse Wez and Feronstrie in Liege, Belgium. She taught kindergarten and home economics. In April 1946, she met husband Loy, in Liege. They married on June 18, 1947. She was granted U.S. citizenship in 1950. Mrs. Nicholes was a courier in the Belgium underground, also known as the resistance, during World War II; worked for the US Army in Offenbach, Germany CCD 747 division in 1946.

Michelle was a member of the VFW Auxiliary 3199, Ladies Auxiliary VFW, St. Stanislaus Seniors, Senior Citizens of Modesto and the YMCA. She enjoyed ice skating, tennis, camping, touring Europe to visit friends and relatives, going on day trips to casinos, watching wrestling on TV, talking to her friends on the phone and collecting clocks.

She leaves behind her son, Bryan Nicholes of Ceres; and grandson, Colby Nicholes, also of Ceres. She was preceded in death by her parents Emile and Eva Fraikin and husband Loy Nicholes.
