Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at Lakewood Funeral Home for Olive Beatrice Mendes, 98, of Hughson. She died Aug. 26, 2011 in Modesto, surrounded by her family and friends.

A chapel service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Lakewood's Heritage Chapel, 900 Santa Fe Ave., Hughson.

Born March 8, 1913 in Walnut Creek to John and Mary Benito Serpa, Olive and lived on her family's dairy farm in Hughson, CA. She married Manuel Mendes on Oct. 27, 1935. She was a homemaker for 76 years and enjoyed cooking Portuguese food, crocheting, and spending time with her family and visiting with friends. Mrs. Mendes lived most recently at Vintage Faire Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

She leaves behind her three children, Manuel Mendes Jr., Mary Ann Vierra and Bernadette Morden; six grandchildren, Michelle Frampton, Lana Vierra, Michael Vierra, Ann Mary Magnussen, Barbara Bell and Shawntelle Nunes; and 14 great-grandchildren, Brandon Santos, Nicole Santos, R.C. Berry Jr., Tyler Framptom, Ashton Frampton, Brooke Magnussen, Taylor Magnussen, Hayley Bell, Nathan Bell, David Nunes, Ellen Nunes, Paige Vierra, Peyton Vierra and Presley Vierra. She was preceded in death by husband Manuel, brothers Arthur Serpa, John Serpa and Alvin Serpa, sister Virginia Gonsalves, and grandchildren Carolyn Santos and David Morden.
