A memorial service was held Monday at the Livingston United Methodist Church for Orville C. Young, 79, of Livingston. The former Ceres resident died Feb. 11, 2009 at home.

Born May 15, 1929, Mr. Young was a native Lenna, Okla., moving to Ceres around 1935. He graduated from Ceres schools where he was an outstanding athlete. In 1944 he was drafted into the Army; he and five of his six brothers served in the military during World War II. After discharge, "O.C." attended Modesto Junior College, playing football, basketball and baseball. Orville earned his teaching credential from San Jose State University and spent the next 39 years teaching and coaching at Le Grand, Hilmar and Livingston high schools before retiring in 1989. Mr. Young had been an active member of the community of Livingston since 1958.

Orville was a very active community member and served as president and held other offices in the Livingston Lions Club. He was active in the Livingston United Methodist Church. He enjoyed serving as a short-term missionary for the UMC in Bolivia the summer of 1967. Orville was inducted into the first class of Modesto Junior College's Hall of Fame. In 1961 he was named coach of the year and coached in the Elk's All Star football game. Mr. Young worked to make conditions better for his fellow teachers as president of the Merced-Mariposa Teachers Association and California Retired Teachers Association, where he served several terms.

He leaves behind his wife of 60 years, Marion Young of Livingston; his children, Anita Young Feeney, Gloria Young Burke and Roger Young; his brother, Trent Young of Ceres; four granddaughters, Jessica Feeney, Chelsea Feeney, Lesley Young and Stephanie Young; and two step-grandsons, Eric Burke and Matthew Burke.

Remembrances may be sent to the Livingston United Methodist Church Memorial Fund, designated for NewLife, Zambia, to purchase a hand-operated bicycle for a person who cannot walk; or to the Paralyzed Veterans of America, 7 Mill Brook Road, Wilton, NH 03086-0925.
