Visitation will be held Sunday, Jan. 27 from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. with the rosary at 3 p.m. at the Colonial Chapel of Franklin & Downs in Modesto for Richard Ralph "Dick" Paul, 80, of Modesto. The former Ceres resident died Jan. 17, 2008.

A Memorial Mass will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 28, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 1813 Oakdale Road, Modesto. A Karumsha (an Assyrian meal) will immediately follow the service in the reception hall at St. Joseph's Church.

Born Oct. 24, 1927 in San Francisco to Nicholas and Lillian Paul, Dick moved to Ceres in 1943 and was senior class president of Ceres High School Class of 1945. After he graduated, he entered the Navy as pharmacist mate and served in San Diego, and Maui, Hawaii. After his discharge he met Miriam "Sally" Ward; they married on Sept. 28, 1949. They had two children and were married for 57 years before she died.

Mr. Paul worked for Stanislaus County and the State of California Division of Highways. He then went to the University of Nevada, Reno, where he graduated in 1968 with a BS in Geological Engineering, and from there worked in the Phelps Dodge Copper Mine in Morenci, Ariz. In 1972 he returned to Modesto to work for the city of Modesto Engineering Department where he retired in 1985.

Mr. Paul was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church and was a third degree in the Knights of Columbus. He was a member of the Mother Lode Mineral Society and the Free 'n Easy Travel Club. He and his wife traveled all over the United States and Canada on many adventures until just a few years ago. Dick was very proficient at lapidary and enjoyed making jewelry, clocks and displays out of the geological findings from his travels.

He leaves behind his children, Nicholas J. Paul and Emmalou S. Paul, and Deborah L. Paul; his sister, Patricia Quigley of Turlock; four grandchildren, Nicolette, Winnie, Peter and Torry; and three great-grandchildren, Donald, Nicholas and Kristeena, all of Oakdale. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife.
