A memorial service was held Saturday at the Ceres Chapel of Franklin and Downs for Ruby Faye Duarte, 95, of Turlock. She died April 1, 2012 after a short illness.

Born Oct 31, 1916 in Crawfordsville, Ind., to Marus L. Layne and Opal Zachery Layne, Ruby attended schools in Michigan during the Depression. She met her first husband Henry Thomas Carter in Michigan in 1937. Their son, Marcus Henry Carter was born in Michigan before they came to California in late 1940 where her daughter Rosamary Carter Lindsey followed in 1941. Ruby worked for a few years after becoming a single parent. She married Clark Duarte in 1947 and gave him two sons, Richard Duarte and Darrel Duarte who preceded her in death.

Survivors include her stepdaughters, Caroline Duarte Kitterman of Alameda and Kathleen Menghetti of Modesto; four grandchildren, Michael Lindsey, Gwendolyn Lindsey Dunne, Paula Carter Simonds all of La Quinta, and Angie Duarte Smith of Ceres; and four great-grandchildren, Timothy Lindsey, Cortney Higginbotham, Joey Simonds and Ben Simonds. She was also preceded in death by grandson Jeff Carter.
