Services were held at Emanuel Lutheran Church for Ruth L. Cartmill Schmidt, 86, of Modesto. The former Hughson resident died March 2, 2008.

Burial was at Acacia Cemetery under the direction of Salas Brothers Funeral Chapel.

Born June 29, 1921, Mrs. Schmidt was a native of Trenton, Mo. After attending a teacher's college, she enlisted in the Navy Waves in 1944 and served until 1947 as a cook supervisor. While stationed at Mare Island, Ruth met Carl Schmidt and they were wed in 1946. They lived in Tracy and Modesto, before moving to a Hughson farm. While they developed a walnut farm, Ruth also worked as a cafeteria manager at Hughson Elementary School. She was a world traveler and visited many countries. After her husband Carl died in 1985, Ruth left Hughson after 29 years there and moved back to Modesto. For 56 years Mrs. Schmidt was a member of Emanuel Lutheran Church where she was a volunteer, secretary, and a member of the Church Council. She was especially glad that she could get her children to church every week. Ruth volunteered at Hospice for many years. In 1988, she was recognized by California as an exceptional volunteer.

She leaves behind is survived by her children, Stanley Schmidt of Arcata, Christine Schmidt of Hayward, Gregory Schmidt of Sparks, Nev., and Marian McKenzie of Santa Barbara; her sister, Shirley Remeta of Sacramento; and five grandchildren and four great-grand children.
