Services were held for Velda Fern Daniel, 82, of Ceres. She died Sept. 18, 2007 at the Alexander Cohen Hospice House in Hughson.

Burial was private under the care of the Ceres Chapel of Franklin & Downs.

Born Feb. 26, 1925, Mrs. Daniel was a native of Charleston, Ark., born to William and Esta Smither. She moved to rural Shawnee, Okla., as a child and was raised in a two-story home that served as a general store. She later spent time between Richmond, where she graduated from high school, Washington state and Oklahoma. In 1944 she married an Air Force career man, Barnie Lee Daniel, and they spent time in Fairbanks, Alaska, Little Rock, Ark., and on Lake Huron near Oscoda, Mich. After he left the military in 1964, they settled in Ceres where her brother and sister were living.

She worked at Memorial and Doctors medical centers, starting in late night admissions at Memorial South in Ceres in the late 1960s. Mrs. Daniel later worked in billing and insurance departments at Doctors Medical Center. She worked into her late 70s, as a per diem consultant in Medicare for Doctors.

Mrs. Daniel enjoyed ceramics, sewing, playing dominoes and bowling. After retiring, Velda enjoyed traveling with her siblings, doing jigsaw puzzles, watching professional bull riding, gardening and attending church.

She leaves behind two sons, Alan Daniel of Oakland and Gordon Daniel of Las Vegas; her brother, Marion Odell Smither of Ceres; and three grandsons and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two siblings, Lois Wilkinson and Monroe Alexander Smither.
