A graveside service was held Tuesday at Ceres Memorial Park for Velter "Pete" James Barrow, 90, of Ceres. He died on June 29, 2008.

Salas Brothers Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Born Jan. 6, 1918, Mr. Barrow was a native of Hugo, Okla. He was a long-time resident of Ceres, where he raised his children along with wife Monta. Pete served in the Army where he earned several medals of honor. Mr. Barrow was employed as a carpenter before his retirement. He was a member of the Southern Baptist Church in Modesto where he was a Sunday School teacher. Mr. Barrow enjoyed fishing with friends and taking care of grandchildren.

He leaves behind his children, Junior Barrow of Coursegold, Priscilla Lee of Taneyville, Mo., Fran Stanford of Riverbank, Edith Robinson, Chris Wright of Antioch, and Bill Barrow of North Highlands; his brother, Chester Barrow of Henderson, Nev.; two sisters, Leota Camera of Modesto, Neta Simon of Henderson, Nev.; and 20 grandchildren and 33 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Monta Barrow (in 2007), and daughters Fern Elsworth and Cindy Kirk.
