A funeral Mass was held Monday at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Hughson for Vernon Mays, 85, of Ceres. He died May 15, 2012 in Modesto.

Burial was at Lakewood Memorial Park under the direction of the Colonial Chapel of Franklin & Downs Funeral Home.

Born Nov. 16, 1926 in Nebraska, Vernon grew up in Missouri and was a Ceres resident for 72 years. He owned and operated Vernon Mays Trucking. He graduated from Ceres High School in 1946 and was a charter member of St. Anthony's Knights of Columbus in Hughson. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and had a lifelong interest in auto racing.

He leaves behind five children, Robert Mays of Pleasanton, Janet Rogers of Oak Harbor, Wash., Donna Borges of Turlock, Ann Sorensen of Los Altos and Kay Joens of San Jose; his grandchildren, Amy Mays, Lisa Mays, Erin Linton, Joel Rogers, Todd Borges, Allison Borges, Alex Sorensen, Adam Sorensen, Jonathan Sorensen and Matthew Joens; and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years Doris Mays and parents Guy and Verna Mays.
