Funeral services were held Friday at the Church of Brethren in Modesto for Violet Ethel Kauffman Wray, 94, of Modesto. She died peacefully at her home Feb. 15, 2009 surrounded by family members.

The McHenry Chapel of Franklin & Downs was in charge of arrangemens, including burial at Modesto Citizens Cemetery.

Born June 6, 1914, Violet was a native of Williston, N.D. When she was 6 years old, her family moved to Ceres then to Modesto. She attended local schools. Violet married Roland E. Wray on June 6, 1933 and they became owners of Woodbridge Market in North Modesto until their retirement in 1972. After retiring from the market, they became the custodians of their church. Violet enjoyed being a member of the quilting bee at the Church of the Brethren for many years. She also enjoyed gardening and having her family around for holiday barbecues.

She leaves behind her husband of 75 years, Roland E. Wray, her children, James E. Wray of Linden, John E. Wray of Modesto, and Janice R. Beltran of Twain Harte; and six 6 grandchildren, and 10 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by parents Ora and Laura Kauffman, brothers Leroy Kauffman and Harvey J. Kauffman and sisters Florence Olsen and Ruth Spenker.
