Memorial services were held Saturday at Samaritan Village in Hughson and at Grace Lutheran Church in Modesto for William "Bill" Louis Berger, 81, of Hughson. He died Nov. 19, 2008 in Hughson and was buried with full military honors at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery on Nov. 25.

Born in St. Louis in September 1927, Mr. Berger attended elementary school and Cleveland High School. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1950 with a degree in mechanical engineering; he was a registered professional engineer in several states and held two patents. He enjoyed dogs, reading and history, and was known for his love for his country and his family.

He leaves behind his wife of 58 years, LaVerne (Hoppe) Berger of Hughson; his children, Kathy Rohdin, Lori Berger, and Bill Berger, all of California; and two grandchildren.

Remembrances may be sent to the building fund at Grace Lutheran Church, 617 W. Orangeburg Ave., Modesto, CA 95350.
