A funeral service was held Oct. 12 at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in St. Louis, Mo., for Zoie Irene Joseph Markantonis, 77. She died Oct. 6, 2010 in Ballwin, Mo., after a long battle with breast cancer.

Burial was at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery.

Born Sept. 9, 1933 in Livingston, Zoie graduated from Livingston High School in 1952. She married George Markantonis in 1956, and lived in Livingston on the family ranch until they moved to Modesto in 1975. Zoie and George owned Jewel's Cafe on the old Highway 99 in Livingston and then the Peach Tree Restaurant in Ceres. She retired from the Stanislaus County Sheriff's Department having served 13 years as a cook supervisor. Mrs. Markantonis moved to Ballwin, Mo., in 1999 to be near their grandchildren.

She leaves behind her husband, George Markantonis of Ballwin, Mo.; her children, Anna Maria Markantonis of Woodbridge, N.J., Nicolette Rubio of Riverside, Alexandra Fehlig of Ballwin, and Michael Markantonis of Newport Beach; her brother, Steve Joseph of Atwater; her sister, Harriet Vaughn of Rogue River, Ore.; and four grandchildren. She was preceded in death by parents;Harry and Louise Joseph, sisters Cleo Katsounakis, Athena DiBartolo and Georgia Lagovardos, and brothers George and Alexander Joseph.
