Giving up control that we shouldn't

Health care is the biggest national discussions today. We have a president and Congress willing to dismantle our current system of health care in favor of a government run system that will drive up costs, add more bloated bureaucracy and drive many out of private practice.

While something should be done, the current approach is sadly going to bankrupt our already bankrupted nation.

It would seem to me that what that perhaps we need to all start thinking of ways to avoid using the system altogether. Few people stick to a regimen of healthy eating and exercise. How many Americans actually follow the Surgeon General's advice of getting at least 30 minutes of exercise each day? How many have actually decided to quit smoking - hey did you know cigarettes cause cancer - and lose the weight that causes to heart disease?

Part of the problem for our out of control health care costs is that so many people who should be well are sick because of their choices.

Beware of a government that believes that giving up personal choice and liberty in the generic interests of the "children" or health care costs. Beware of people who suggest that "public health care is even more essential to our country than public education" as I read a letter to the editor expressed by Calvin Yost of Turlock. He then goes on to say that "If you are a healthy child with caring parents, you could walk to the library and self-educate yourself. For example, Abraham Lincoln. In contrast, if you are sickly, you won't be able to go to school. Or, if you are an adult with health problems and no insurance, you won't be able to maximize your potential either personally or economically."

Quit the hype. Poor in this country do not go without medical coverage. We already have a system in place to take care of the medically indigent. Let's quit selling this country down the river of socialism, clamouring for a government that takes care of anything and everything. Our Founding Fathers are rolling over in their graves as the sheep of the masses are bleating for more government control as if they're helpless to provide for themselves.
