Seems beneath the city to charge an officer for canine
letter

Editor, Ceres Courier,

In the editor’s article last week you chose to wrote about my objection to charging $1 for the city’s police dog. No, I did not know it was gonna go for $1 and yes I did end up giving the officer the dollar to pay for the dog with pleasure.

My point was here was an officer who was willing to give the police dog, a good home for the rest of its life after it has performed its services for several years. It just seems beneath the city to charge the officer for that dog. I don’t care if it was only a dollar, it just seemed wrong.

I realize that the rules for the city probably say they have to charge for the dog. Maybe it’s time to change that rule. Maybe it’s time to look at the dog as more than an object the city owns.

The city doesn’t own the police officers when they hire them; why can’t they say that the dog is also hired?

If they did that they could retire the dog with dignity, not for a price.
