The Ceres Blaze 14-and-under travel baseball team capped off the 2012 season with an 0-5 showing at the Bel Passi Pony Invitational Tournament this past week.

"We had a pretty rough year," head coach Bill Campbell said. "We didn't place at any tournaments. We had commitment issues. I've never experienced that during all-stars."

Bel Passi Navy Blue avoided finishing in last place at the four-team tourney with a 5-2 win over the short-handed Blaze on July 25.

Ceres, which had no bench players, stranded two runners on base in the first inning..

"We did that a lot this year," Campbell said.

The Blaze dropped two games to both Bel Passi Navy (5-2, 6-4) and Bel Passi Red (19-2, 12-2), and one to Dos Palos (11-8).

"We just didn't hit the ball," Campbell said. "Our defense has been pretty good all year. We tried everything to motivate the kids. We even ran practices different."

Ceres' lone highlight of the season was generated at the Pony Baseball West Zone NorCal Central Valley Region District Tournament.

The Blaze failed to place despite winning three of four games at the July 5-9 event.

Ceres topped Brentwood All-Stars (3-1), Brentwood Blast (5-3) and Bel Passi (5-0).

"Everybody had fun," Campbell said.
