Ceres High’s John Alba, Rudy Gonzales, Abel Morales, Diego Diaz and Luis Camarillo, and Central Valley’s Joaquin Garcia, Luis Saucedo and Christian Oliver will make the trek to Stockton this Friday to compete at the Sac-Joaquin Section Masters Tournament.

“I expect them to go out there, compete hard, do their best and have fun,” Bulldogs head coach Steve Festa said. “Nothing is going to be given to us.”

“I expect it to be very competitive,” Hawks leader Rob Beckhart said. “Our kids will be ready for it. I’m excited to see what happens.”

The top seven placers in each weight class will advance to the CIF State Meet.

Seeded fourth, Alba posted a 3-0 record on his way to a first-place showing in the 152-pound weight bracket at the Division-IV Championships last week at Foothill High School.

Gonzales (215s, 3-1) took third at Divisionals.

Morales (2-2, 195s), Diaz (170s, 4-2) and Camarillo (120s, 4-2) placed fourth in their respective weight classes.

John and Rudy both captured Western Athletic Conference titles on Feb. 13.

“We could have multiple state-qualifiers,” Festa said. “It doesn’t matter what your seed is or grade you’re in. I expect them to compete at a high level.”

Saucedo (113s, 2-1) and Garcia (182s, 2-1) both placed second at the Division-IV tourney.

Oliver (120s, 3-1) took third.

Joaquin captured the 182-pound WAC crown.

“It’s going to be tough no matter where you fall in the bracket,” Beckhart said.

The Masters tournament will be staged at Stockton Arena on Friday and Saturday.

“We’re not done,” Festa said. “We can continue to improve. That’s what’s scary.”
