Bulldogs earn league honors

Ceres High's Lesley Willems put her two cents in during the Modesto Metro Conference's awards selection process for varsity water polo players on Oct. 29 at Johansen High School. She left disappointed.

"I hate going to these kind of meetings," Willems said. "The other coaches already know who they're going to vote for."

Just four Bulldogs garnered all-league honors, including Kelly Yoder, Kevin Fliflet, Laura Goblirsch and Chris Rossi.

"Kelly and Kevin deserved to be on the first team," Willems said.

Yoder and Fliflet garnered second-team honors.

Kelly starred on the girls team. The tall, lanky goalkeeper tallied at least 10 blocks in every game.

"We might have been dead last had Kelly not been there," Willems said. "She pretty much saved us."

Yoder proved to be a quick learner in her first varsity season.

"She picked up the game very fast," Willems said. "She's just a natural athlete."

Kelly also emerged as a team leader.

"All of the girls looked up to her even though she was a junior," Willems said.

Kevin led the boys program in scoring. The senior hole-set tallied 70 goals for the Bulldogs, who persevered despite a coaching change midway through the season.

"He really stepped up as a leader given everything that happened with the boys team," Willems said. "He's just a great kid. He's going to go on and do great things."

Goblirsch and Rossi were honorable-mention selections.

"Both of them worked really hard this year," Willems said.

Goblirsch, a senior hole-set, poured in 35 goals.

Rossi, a senior utility player, accumulated 40 goals. Older brother Joey broke the Bulldogs' single-season scoring record with 131 goals in 2006.

"It's nice Chris gets recognized as his own person," Willems said.

Ceres High's boys and girls teams both finished in fourth place with identical records of 7-7 in the MMC standings, just one spot out of the playoffs.
